Ranking First: Dell XPS 15
There’s always something that seems to be a drawback of the fashionable new notebook – be it the display, the battery, the case, or the general performance. However, Dell’s current XPS 15 (7590) makes the look for faults difficult. It’s one of the simplest 15-inch devices that Techtestreport has been ready to test this year.
At least we will say that about our test sample, which isn’t necessarily cheap with a 4K OLED display, Core i7-9750H, 16 GByte RAM and Geforce GTX 1650. In our opinion, a worthwhile investment is, as we will see within the course of the test. But not only the display is worth a glance.
Like the XPS 13 (9380), Dell relies on a chassis that’s as compact as possible within the new XPS 15. It is often also successful: There are hardly any display edges, and therefore the case isn’t too thick. A weight of 4.32 lbs is a good weight for a tool during this category, although this is often not the best value. The silver-coloured metal lid and, therefore, the lower shell in carbon fibre also follow the XPS series’s design. That knows the way to please.
Interestingly, Dell even replicated the smaller model’s connectivity: there are two USB-A slots, a Thunderbolt 3 port, and HDMI 2.0a. . there’s also an SD card reader, which is beneficial for using camera equipment on the go, for instance. beat all, these are enough connections for many applications. Still, we could have easily imagined another USB-A or USB-C port or an RJ45 socket here.
Keyboard and Trackpad
Apart from the marginally larger keys, connoisseurs of the XPS series will quickly find themselves within the touchpad and keyboard. The chiclet keys have a reasonably flat but pleasant point. The critical layout also corresponds to the – in our test sample American – usual standard. Even the LED backlighting could sit unrecognizable within the XPS 13.
The touchpad is additionally reliable and somewhat more extensive than its 13-inch counterpart. Thus, it performs a touch better overall. Only the still a touch an excessive amount of play between the keycaps, and therefore the case shell doesn’t seem to be something the manufacturer wants to enhance yet.
After first turning on the 15.6-inch OLED panel – a 156WR04 from Samsung – we’ve to marvel initially. The Windows 10 desktop rarely looks so contrasty. Apart from really demanding games: The XPS 15 (7590) has enough power for nearly any productive task within the configuration at hand. The Core i7-9750H’s performance is awe-inspiring. Dell has increased the performance budget from 45 to 55 watts, leading to excellent results in the test.
The six-core Cinebench R20 reaches about 2,558 points with twelve threads within the multi-core benchmark Cinebench R20. Even the Razer Blade 15 Advanced, which is meant for gaming with a uniform processor, has got to give in to the present value. It only achieves a mean of two,073 points. We measured similarly reasonable rates within the Blender benchmark BMW27. The CPU needs 5:04 minutes for rendering in XPS 15, an open rate.
The Turing GPU Geforce GTX 1650 isn’t quite as impressive. However, it can, for instance, support the processor within the video editing program Adobe Premiere Pro CC when rendering content. However, this strongly depends on the displayed content. So we will save a touch of your time in effect-heavy scenes. The GPU can only subtract about one second from this already quite blast. Within the right situations, this will look different.
Although not in great detail or native 4K resolution, some games can also be played through the dedicated GPU. Within the tactical shooter, CS: GO passable frame rates also are possible in native resolution. However, for this, we set the graphic details to average values. Full HD game speed reached 83 fps. In 4K resolution, the measurement isn’t much lower with 79 fps, a minimum of during this title.
In the medieval game Mordhau it’s quite different. Here we also set the graphic details to medium beforehand. In Full-HD resolution, we will still play very smoothly with 60 fps. In 4K mode, the frame rate dropped to 24fps inaccessible – the apparent jitters ruined our accuracy.

Toshiba’s XG6 even competes with, say, a Samsung PM981. We measured reliable rates: 3,022 MByte/s in sequential writing and a couple of 740 MByte/s in sequential reading. These are reasonable rates.
Noticeable is the massive heat pipes and, therefore, the two fans that cool the CPU, GPU, and other components. The notebook is surprisingly quiet even under full load – for instance, in games or within the Cinebench R20 marathon. A hissing sound is often heard, but that’s not like the high-frequency screeching of a Razer Blade 15, which is far louder even within the Revised Version. We’ve to mention that the XPS 15 has got to cool a less potent graphics unit.
When watching Netflix episodes, surfing online, or writing, the XPS isn’t audible in the least. But where we mentioned checking out flaws within the beginning: a quiet coil whirring is often heard once we move our ear on the brink of the keyboard. However, this isn’t noticeable from a sensible posture and with ambient noises within the office.
We think that the OLED panel may be a highlight. It glows very brightly with a maximum of 507 cd/m²; the strong contrasts thanks to the display technology make even the Windows desktop look interesting. Icons and text look very sharp thanks to the 4K resolution. Not even the reflective display can diminish the superb impression.
Dell doesn’t try anything new with the chassis. The predecessor’s case is recycled. Therefore, the XPS 15 seems like a bigger version of the also excellent XPS 13 (9380). I also apply to the connections, which are sufficient for nearly all work processes. One or two more ports would have made the device a touch more practical, though.
In benchmarks, the XPS 15’s Intel Core i7-9750H is quicker than the identical CPU within the gaming notebook Razer Blade 15 Advanced, which in itself is fast on the road. Accordingly, the chip is additionally suitable for rendering and image processing.
The Geforce GTX 1650 is a smaller amount powerful, though. We will play less demanding games like CS: GO or Mordhau thereon, but not many fps are possible in Division 2.
Apart from the display, we discover the battery as a second strong argument. We will watch almost nine hours on the Netflix device. Even light paperwork in continuous use gets an identical runtime.

Ranking Second: Microsoft Surface Book 2
In February 2016, Microsoft released a singular Detachable, a notebook with a removable display. We are once more very impressed with the touch display of the Surface Book 2: the IPS panel with a resolution of three .000 x 2.000 pixels shines very brightly with 404 cd/m² and achieves an upscale contrast with 1.823:1. The display has been excellently calibrated.
The 3:2 ratio is delightful for working, but the glare coating reflections are disturbing in bright light. On the rear of the display, the well-known 5-megapixel camera with autofocus takes decent photos. In contrast, the 5 megapixel model within the front is suitable for voice chats and is supported by an infrared sensor for Windows Hello.
The chiclet keyboard is among the higher ones on the market because they have a stroke and release tightly. The multi-level white backlighting is unfortunately only helpful in reasonably dark environments thanks to the silver caps.
The Fn key’s still located to the proper of the Ctrl key because it should be. Generally, there are not many changes to the layout. Under the keyboard, on the hardware side, on the opposite hand, tons has changed: performance and runtime are significantly improved.
The Surface Book is provided with the new Core i7-8650U (Kaby Lake Refresh) and thus has four cores with eight threads rather than only half as many. On top of that, the quad-core can take up to 35 watts of power for a brief time and up to 25 watts permanently, which is hugely beneficial for speed.
The CPU is twice as fast for light workloads as within the Surface Book, but still, 50 per cent faster under long loads. The most straightforward thing about it: Microsoft cools the Core i7-8650U passively rather than employing a fan. Within the one-hour video encoding test (4K30 with 10 bit), this is often sufficient for a mean of two—4 GHz and fluctuating temperatures between 70 and 90 degrees Celsius.
Microsoft relies on a current Geforce GTX 1050 (without Ti suffix) with 2 GByte GDDR5 within the graphics unit. Compared to the Geforce 940M/GDDR5, the new Nvidia graphics is typically twice as fast, regardless of if in current games or when computing, for instance, at path tracing.
If a program runs on the Geforce, it must be closed before the tablet is often removed. A seamless transition doesn’t work. The CPU and GPU values are valid for both power supply and battery operation because the power status ‘Recommended’ is preset.
If you would like to urge more performance out of Surface Book 2, you’ll also use ‘Better Performance’ or ‘Best Performance.’ Caution: The processor then clocks significantly higher, and therefore the Geforce surges from about 1.3 to 1.5 GHz. It drains the battery much faster than ‘Recommended,’ and the 95-watt surface power supply isn’t even sufficient at the very best level.
Thanks to the shortage of a USB-C power supply with an overflow of 95 watts, we can’t say whether the matter is often circumvented in this manner.
Apart from far more power, the Surface Book 2 also runs longer than the first version, partly thanks to the 75 (57+18) watt-hours rather than 69 (51+18) watt-hours. At 150 candela per square meter of brightness (corresponds to 60 per cent),
we achieve an honest 12:29 rather than 10:35 hours in Powermark Productivity. The old Surface Book’s worth was decided after the major firmware update (see retest); previously, it had been only 9:45 hours.
The new Detachable is silent in office mode, browsing online, and relatively quiet in ‘recommended’ games. The fan within the keyboard unit quickly gets loud within the two higher modes. A quick note about the remainder of the hardware: The Surface Book 2 supports Bluetooth 4.1 and ac-2×2 WLAN, but LTE is missing. A PM961 from Samsung comes into play because of the NVMe-SSD.
Like its predecessor, the Surface Book 2 is uniquely Detachable: no other 2-in-1 unit with a 13.5-inch display delivers the maximum amount of flexibility and power. Because of four rather than two CPU cores, the removable tablet calculates fast, and on top of that, it’s now cooled silently. The Geforce-GTX-1050 graphics unit within the keyboard dock achieves twice the performance of the primary Surface Book and therefore, the battery life increases by 20 per cent in everyday use.
The excellent touch screen in 3:2 format remains convincing, and that we welcome the introduction of a USB-C socket. Unfortunately, Microsoft wasn’t consistent, as there’s neither full USB 3.1 Gen2 speed nor the choice to attach an eGPU via Thunderbolt 3. the very fact that an LTE modem is missing maybe a point of criticism that was already present within the predecessor.
If you’ll come to terms with this, you’ll get a relatively cheap and excellent Detachable Laptop with a gorgeous look, which brings the Microsoft Surface Book 2 on the second rank versus the Dell XPS 15. If you’re on a budget, though, we might recommend shopping for the Microsoft Surface Book 2 since it’s way cheaper than the XPS 15 while still performing well.
